The Marq started as a feasibility study that determined building a new facility was best for this community. In a three phase design process the Southlake Tennis Center (8,168 sf), Legends Hall (108,000 sf) and Champions Club (84,000 sf) became a reality!

The City of Southlake commissioned Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture to conduct a study analyzing the feasibility of constructing of a new multipurpose community facility in Bicentennial Park. A statistically valid survey of residents and several on-site workshops were conducted to assess potential community uses.

Programmatic components include a recreation center, senior center, aquatic center, public library, public meeting spaces, Community Services Department administrative office space, and building support areas. The purpose of the study was to assist the City Council in making their determination to purchase and renovate an existing church building or construct a new center to meet the community’s multipurpose facility needs. The results of this study helped determine the conditions, constraints and best community uses of the existing facility and site.

The Marq had a theme of intersecting rings. The rings represented the linking of the community center with Bicentennial Park, Southlake Tennis Center and the greater Southlake community. The floorplan shows how the Active Adult Center in Legends Hall links with the multigenerational Champions Club. The batik kawung pattern of intersecting rings can be found in the skylight of Legends Hall and the exterior frieze of the Tennis Center and the Marq. The rings are carried through on the windows of the natatorium and on the ceiling of the lobby of the Champions Club. Curved windows connect different program spaces to create a bright and welcoming space.
