More than two decades of community vision come to life in Grand Junction’s Community Recreation Center. Inspired by the Grand Valley’s changing light, layered landscapes and dramatic views, the design brings recreation, wellness and gathering together beneath one roof, creating a welcoming, adaptable community destination shaped by the people and place it serves.

Faceted | Reflecting the Grand Valley
The architecture takes cues from the layered and angular forms of the surrounding terrain. Varied building forms, material transitions, and changing perspectives give the center multiple identities depending on where it is viewed, creating a facility that belongs to the broader landscape while remaining distinctly its own.

Adaptation | Designed for Changing Light
Grand Junction’s landscape is never static. The building responds through its solar orientation, expansive daylight and changing relationships between interior and exterior. As sunlight moves across the building, spaces shift in character, reinforcing the idea of a community continually adapting to its environment.

Convergence | Creating a Community Crossroads
Just as Grand Junction sits at the convergence of landscapes, waterways, people and recreational opportunities, the center brings diverse activities together. Circulation weaves through the facility as a shared social spine, creating moments for gathering, visibility and spontaneous interaction between people of different ages and interests.
A More Responsible Aquatic Experience
Sustainability extends beyond daylight and orientation. The five-pool aquatic complex uses newer, more energy-efficient equipment and independent filtration systems that filter and recycle pool water, helping reduce water use during daily operations—an especially meaningful strategy in western Colorado’s environment.
Community partnerships expanded the original 83,000-square-foot concept to 107,000 square feet, allowing the aquatics program to grow from three pools to five while adding more fitness and community space.
