Thornton Active Adult Center

Thornton, Colorado

We conducted a facility assessment of the Thornton Senior Center in 2013 and found that it was busting at the seams. The new space is double the size of the old space. It is welcoming, comforting and cozy and the seniors of Thornton depend on the programs.

In 2013, Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture was hired by the City of Thornton to provide a facility needs assessment and conceptual design to determine potential renovations and improvements to the Thornton Senior Center at the Dorothy Boulevard Location. Using this information, the City applied for a GoCo grant to help fund the work. Once funding was in place, BRS was hired to provide design services for the improvements to include a new entrance vestibule, improve circulation, provide a new reception desk/office area, and raise the level of finishes to a modern Active Aging Center level.

In 2018, Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture was hired by the City of Thornton to design a new Active Adult Center on the corner of 112th Avenue and Colorado Blvd. At 26,000 square feet, this dry single-story building includes a wheelchair-friendly front desk, a full lounge and library space, a wet arts classroom with more storage, a ceramics and kiln room, wellness rooms for massage, podiatry, acupuncture and visiting nurse services, a multipurpose space that can be used as a dining room with entertainment, patio space with mountain views, a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen, fitness studio and group exercise classroom, and a tech room for computer classes.

The new building includes floor to ceiling windows overlooking the mountains and a large front porch where people can sit and talk about the weather. On the interior, windows or screens made of an aspen leaf pattern help give a vibrant and transparent feeling to the space. It is a place to gather that embraces you in warmth and comfort.
