Utilizing the natural topography site, the main entry of the new facility is on the upper level with larger volume spaces located on the lower level to minimize building massing in relation to the surrounding residential neighborhood. The upper level has views down into the pool area and the front range of the Rocky Mountains beyond. The design incorporates the themes of “prairie”, “ranch”, and “simple forms” that are found in the local neighborhood Framework Development Plan.
Wheatlands community vision and character design guideline standards suggest the recreational building be, “evocative of a traditional ranch compound, characterized by a collection of “out buildings” which cradles meaningful open space.”
Phase I program elements include a 6-lane competition pool, fitness equipment areas including an egym and high intensity interval training room, aerobics room, spin room, Pilates room, teaching kitchen, child watch, administrative space and locker rooms. Future planning leaves room for an addition including a gymnasium.
The facility will be owned by the WPRA and operated by the YMCA. The ownership team has performed due diligence and conducted preliminary review meetings with the City of Aurora to lay the ground work for the project.
