The Birth of a Community Rec Center in Olathe, Kansas

Olathe Community Center under construction

I took a quick trip to Olathe, Kansas a couple weeks ago to check up on the construction progress of the community center we designed in collaboration with our friends at SFS Architecture. It's really coming along!

It’s exciting to see all the items you drew over and over (and over...) during the design phase finally come to life. The change seems to happen even more quickly on projects in which we're not as closely involved in the day-to-day construction progress. The building exterior is now nearly complete, with interior finishes recently underway.

On the walk through the site, we were joined by former (now happily retired) parks and rec director, Kevin Corbett. He and I reminisced about where were a year or two ago, completely immersed in the design process. Looking forward, it's exciting to see what a great addition this community center will be to Olathe. It already feels right at home in Stagecoach Park!

Some highlights thus far...

This pool is going to be a blast! Check out the rock climbing wall with its diving perches at the east end of what will be the lap pool

That's all for now! Next I'm out there will be to check on finishes. Look forward to bringing you some more updates in a couple months...
