Steve Blackburn retires after 18 years with BRS

July 24, 2017

DENVER, CO | 24 JULY 2017
Last week we held a retirement kick-off happy hour for Principal Steve Blackburn. For over 30 years, Steve has dedicated himself to the programming and design of recreation and wellness facilities and remains passionate about the role of design in shaping the communities we work with.

With over 18 years at BRS, Steve was instrumental in taking our recreation design practice nationwide. His work with over 125 communities and 60 colleges and universities have garnered over 30 design excellence awards and are a testament to his ability to engage communities and his passion for designing buildings and places that bring people together.

Steve brought this passion to our firm in 1999 and has been a champion for advancing the design of public spaces ever since. He is a regular speaker at recreation and athletic industry conventions; has authored numerous publications in leading trade and design journals and has developed lasting relationships with clients as a trusted advisor.

Working with clients, consultants, and stakeholders, Steve helped design unique spaces for communities that honor and celebrate local history and culture while looking toward the future to serve the latest trends in recreation and advances in construction and technology.

His work with The Salvation Army on the planning and design of Ray & Joan Kroc Community Centers in over 20 locations across the United States is a testament to his value to a client. His work on The REC of Grapevine and The MARQ Southlake have been instrumental in building our Dallas office.

In addition to advancing the profession, Steve was also an advocate for the next generation of Parks & Recreation professionals and designers. He dedicated time to mentoring BRS staff and leading workshops with college students studying for careers in Parks and Recreation. Steve is excited to continue his mentoring while pursuing additional interests in volunteering, traveling and spending time with family.

Thank you for being a shining star for BRS and all you’ve brought to our firm and our clients over the years. Your inexhaustible energy, leadership skills and commitment to client care have helped to shape our process and our culture, and we are grateful for all the time you have shared with us.

We know we will see you around, but we will miss having our trailblazer, mentor and friend in the office with us; and we wish you all the best in your next adventure!
